If you have a child who is struggling to put on weight, there are various techniques to add calories to their foods. When I met up with my son's dietician, she suggested ways by which I could possibly add calories and even more flavor to my child's meals. Here are the list of things you can add to your little one's food.

  • Ghee

  • Butter

  • Peanut Butter

  • Peanut Butter Powder

  • Whole milk yogurt

  • Milk Powder

Here are ways by which you can incorporate the listed items in your foods. When I cook vegetables or rice, I always use Ghee in place of any other oil. The Kichdi recipe that I have shared also makes use of ghee. Not only does it add richness to the dish, it also enhances the flavor. If your little one likes to eat plain rice, then you can even add ghee on top, warm it up and mix it in well. This again enhances the flavor and kicks up the calorie count a few notches.

As for peanut butter, there are countless ways to incorporate it into your child's meals. They can use peanut butter as a dip for their fruit. This could be a wonderful after school snack. Apples and celery sticks dipped in peanut butter might just encourage your little ones to eat their fruits/vegetables. I usually add a tablespoon of peanut butter to my son's oatmeal every morning. I cook the oatmeal in whole milk. Once cooked, I add peanut butter and bananas. This makes for a wonderful wholesome breakfast and my little one loves it!

Another wonderful afternoon snack is yogurt. I used to give my little one greek yogurt but then found that whole milk yogurt has far more calories. At that point I switched over to the Oui yogurt which comes in many flavors. I usually opt for the strawberry, cherry and peach flavors. If you don't have flavored yogurt, you can also use plain whole milk yogurt and add fruits to it. A great fruit with good calories would be mango. I usually mash the mangoes and add them to the plain whole milk yogurt, and It tastes like a delightful treat!

Another way you can add calories to your child's food is by adding milk powder. You can add milk powder to a smoothie they might like, or oatmeal, or even their yogurts.

To make things a tad bit easier for you, here are the places where I usually get my items. I buy a big can of Ghee from either Costco or Amazon. I also get my peanut butter (organic) from Costco. I love stocking up on this. It is a delicious treat and comes in a pack of 2. I get the whole milk Oui yogurt from Walmart. There are many brands of whole milk powders but I usually get the Nestle Everyday Milk Powder that I purchase from either an ethnic Indian store or amazon. You can also find Nico Milk Powder at Costco.
